Chapter Six

Ted and Jemma Leigh stopped by the grocery store as soon as they had Zach and Jemma Leigh’s parents safely stashed at the Garrity homestead. He’d explained they needed to stock up on non-perishable supplies and frozen goods so they wouldn’t have to surface again for a few days, or weeks if need be. She hoped it wouldn’t take that long. At this point, she’d welcome a confrontation just to get it over with and get back to a normal life.

Seeing them together, buying groceries, gave the townspeople the wrong idea, but Jemma Leigh didn’t mind. It couldn’t be helped. They certainly received an abundance of well wishes before they checked out, and it made Jemma Leigh think about what it would be like to have Teddy back in her life on a permanent basis. Nope, she wasn’t ready to go there—yet.

Ted, handsome and genial character that he was, got more than his fair share of strange glances and comments for wearing a jacket on one of the hottest days of summer. He laughed at the comments and replied that the air had been much drier where he’d come from, and he was having trouble readjusting to the dampness and humidity of the east coast again. No one they came in contact with realized that Ted was wearing the lightweight jacket for a reason—to hide his shoulder holster.

He was armed with an R.C.M.P. issued Smith & Wesson 5946 in 9mm. He’d also hidden a lightweight Colt Python knife with stainless steel laser-cut blade in a sheath in his boot. She hated the necessity but agreed that current circumstances warranted the need for extra protection. The stalker had been smart so far, but killing the postmistress made him a murderer and made them realize the psychotic lunatic was crazy enough to approach them anytime, anywhere.

She wasn’t in the mood to cook, so they stopped at the village take-out and picked up a pizza. Ted liked his with the works, Jemma Leigh wanted donair, the spiced beef, tomatoes, and sweet sauce being more to her liking. They compromised and ordered one pizza, half-and-half.

They returned to the Harding house in a solemn yet watchful mood, both on high alert as Ted pulled into the driveway and drove around behind the barn where they could see into the field. Neither of them saw anything out of the ordinary, so he turned the truck around and pulled up to the back door leading into the kitchen. They unloaded the bags of groceries in complete silence, ears tuned to the slightest of noises and eyes constantly on the lookout.

Knowing they had to be increasingly vigilant from here on out made life seem a touch surreal. Jemma Leigh was isolated in her family home, alone with the only man she had ever loved and wanted only to be close to him, to make love with him one more time. Of this, she said nothing, knowing it would only make the waiting that much harder to bear.
